    For specific questions about courses, please contact the teacher directly. Contact info is below. To enroll in a course, send a $25 registration fee for each course to KONOS CONNECTION. As soon as your registration fee of $25 is received, you will be notified by the teacher with detailed information. Each teacher arranges for and distributes materials. If a course has not met its minimum requirement of students, the registration fee will be refunded. Tuition is paid monthly by the first day of class. Checks are made payable to KONOS CONNECTION. The monthly tuition may be added to other KONOS courses and sent to the following:

  •  Middle-school Math/Pre-Algebra (6th-8th)

    In utilizing Math-U-See curriculum, students will learn all operations necessary to be prepared for algebra. Specifically, fractions, decimals, percentages, and word problems will be mastered. Numbers and linear equations, inequalities, factoring, fractions, graphing, and an introduction to geometry will be covered. Each student will be permitted and encouraged to work at his/her own pace.

    In-depth introduction of variables, constants, expressions and equations. Topics covered will be: solving equations, simplifying expressions, understanding order of operations, using properties, arithmetic operations with positive and negative numbers. Polynomials, factoring, graphing (linear and quadratic equations), working with radicals and expanding arithmetic knowledge.

  • Geometry

    A comprehensive course featuring coverage of geometric terms and processes, logic and problem solving. Includes topics such as parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles, inequalities and quadrilaterals. Various forms of proof are studied. Emphasis is placed upon reasoning and problem solving skills gained through study of similarity, areas, volumes, circles, and coordinate geometry.

  •  Statistical Business Math

    One of the most useful math classes available, this is designed for the student who needs an accredited fourth unit in mathematics, is not interested in pursuing higher mathematics and is interested in how mathematics is used in business and everyday life. Focusing on the practical uses of mathematics, the course covers such areas as basic statistics, taxes, credit, insurance, wages, bank balances, investments, financial sheets and amortization.  Parallel to this course of study the student will be instructed in the use of Microsoft’s Excel, a de facto standard in business today.  After the first month of class, students will do all homework, lecture notes and exams on Excel.  By end of the course the successful student will have earned a skill rating of competent in this product, which is a very good.  Completion of Algebra II required.

    Business Mathematics, A Collegiate Approach by Rouche, Graves and Tuttle, plus solution manual (cost approximately $60)
    - Basic calculator such as that used in algebra
    - Access to a laptop computer which can be brought to each class. The laptop must have Microsoft Office Excel version 2007 or 2010. Earlier Excel versions are not addressed and are outdated.

  •  Advanced Math/Pre-Calculus

    This class is designed for the student who is highly motivated to learn advanced mathematics or who plans to major in a field in college which requires higher mathematics. The course systematically covers all major areas of precalculus up to but not including calculus. Trigonometry is also introduced and studied thoroughly.  The successful student will be prepared to take a first level calculus class of the type offered in universities without having first to take college precalculus. The course requires an average of 5 hours per week in study and homework.

  •  Math SAT Prep

    This new course is intended for the student who needs to brush up on math in order to pass the math portion of the SAT or to attain a high score. The course will last 5 to 6 weeks, 2 hours each week, and will cover the mathematics required to answer more than 95% of SAT math questions.  Practice SAT questions will be given and reviewed in light of the topics covered.  Please note this course applies mathematics to SAT questions; it is not a “tips and tricks” course on how to score well on tests.  The first class will be offered late August to prepare students for the October SAT.  An entry level exam will be given the first class to assess the starting level of each student.  Future classes will be taught based on demand.  Students interested in reviewing for the separate subject tests in mathematics (Math level 1 and 2) should contact Duncan Gibbs.

  • Physical Science

    The course is designed as an introductory overview of the major concepts in chemistry and physics to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills in physical science. The course includes more abstract concepts such as structure of atoms, motion and forces, conservation of matter and energy, action-reaction principle, and the behavior of waves. These concepts are investigated through laboratory experiences and fieldwork designed for students to develop appropriate knowledge and skills in science as inquiry.

  • Biology

    This 2-semester course is a complete overview of molecular/microscopic biology, environmental science, genetics and a complete study of zoology for the freshman or sophomore student. During this class students do approximately twenty full labs along with several outside projects.

  • Chemistry

    This college preparatory course is designed to meet or exceed Georgia Performance Standards as published by Georgia's Department of Education. The class format consists of one hour of lecture and one hour of hands-on laboratory. The following topics are covered: Matter Classification, Atomic Theory,   Periodicity, Bonding, Chemical Reactions, Law of Mass Conservation, Empirical and Molecular Formulas, Stoichiometry, Kinetic Theory, Gas Laws, Solution Chemistry and Acid/Base Chemistry. Each week there are text and laboratory assignments. The course also includes in-class quizzes, proctored exams, a midterm and final exam.
    Prerequisite: Must have completed Algebra I (10th or 11th grade)
    Materials: Chemistry: Concepts and Applications by Phillips will be provided. Students will need to purchase a lab book ($1.50) if they do not have one from the previous year.

    This survey course is designed to provide students with a sound foundation in basic principles and unifying concepts of Environmental Science. Topic selection is based on major themes of modern Environmental sciences: humans and sustainability; science and ecological principles; sustaining biodiversity and natural resources; and sustaining environmental quality and human societies. Students will gain an awareness of the importance of Earth's systems in sustaining our daily lives, plus the scientific foundation and tools needed to apply critical thought to contemporary environmental issues.
    Prerequisite: Must have completed at least two high school level sciences

  • Anatomy and Physiology (11th-12th)

    This course utilizes The Human Body: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made! textbook by Dr. Jay L. Wile and Marilyn M. Shannon and its accompanying Solutions Manual. Because it is a college preparatory course, it requires a lot of commitment to be successful.  Students will study the anatomy and the physiology of the human body's eleven organ systems, covering the material typically taught in a college freshman biology course. Parents should note that the human reproductive system is discussed in detail in this course.
    Prerequisite: Students must have completed biology and chemistry.

  • Computer Science
    David Chandler

    Students will learn the fundamentals of computer programming using the Java language with an emphasis on creating Web applications. This will be a fast-paced, hands-on course with a 2-3 hour programming assignment every week. The course will teach programming fundamentals applicable to any computer language, help your student develop logic and problem-solving skills, and give some appreciation of the difficulty of creating even simple, bug-free programs, with a corresponding appreciation for the knowledge and wisdom of our Creator. As part of the course, students will create a live Web application using Google AppEngine.
    Prerequisite: Typing skill, love of computers, Algebra II and prerequisite test

    A more in-depth, individualized class for students who have completed the Konos Basic Photo Class. We will be visiting professional photographers and inviting them to come speak to us. The students will be taking more photos than in the beginning photo class so they can practice what they learn. They will work with Lightroom and Photoshop, print, mount and display their photos and put together a portfolio.

  • Physical Fitness (individual or group)
    Students will learn how to use a combination of gymnastics, weightlifting, plyometrics, stretching, competitive games, sport and cardio training to maintain their health, increase self-eesteem, and maximize their performance. The course focuses on 10 general physical skills that are core to athletic performance: endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Additionally, two nutrition models will be presented, discussed, and applied. Grades will be based on participation as well as keeping a workout and food journal, including at-home workouts

SUSAN HAYES (science teacher), B.A. Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, M.S. education, Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has taught for 16 years in Christian School Education following a four-year stint with Union Carbide in research.

DEBI MONTGOMERY (math teacher), B.A. business, Georgia State University, owner and teacher at Rising Star Montessori for the last ten years, is a specialist in math teaching. She has one son in KONOS ACADEMY.

DUNCAN GIBBS (business math, advanced math/pre-calculus, math SAT prep), MBA, West Texas A&M University, Th.M., Dallas Seminary, post-graduate studies at Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, University of Texas; retired director of Information Technology at The Coca-Cola Company; father of three home schooled sons, all graduates of KONOS ACADEMY; former instructor, West Texas State University, Information Systems.

JOANNE LEE (KONOS Communicators Speech/Debate), B.S. in Business Marketing from Long Island University and MBA from St. John’s University, worked as an underwriter/speech writer before she and her husband John co-founded Grace Christian Academy, a classical Christian school in Merrick, New York. She served on the school board and as administrator before moving to Georgia. The Lees home school their five children; three attend KONOS ACADEMY, KONOS JUNIORS, and KONOS KIDS. Along with assisting with the plays, this is her fourth year with KONOS Communicators.

DAVID CHANDLER (computer science teacher), B.S. electrical engineering from University of Kansas and KONOS dad, has programmed since he was 14 and loves to help others create things using computers. He is the author of Running a Perfect Web Site, a computer best-seller published in 1995, and has worked as a web applications developer and instructor at the Internet banking division of Intuit. He is the founder of RememberOneAnother.com, a Web site to help Christians organize and share prayer requests.

KAREN STROUD (photography teacher) has received training in photography from Brooks Institute of Photography, West Coast School of Photography, Orange Coast College, Pasadena City College and has worked professionally in the portrait, wedding and photojournalism fields. As a long-term homeschool mom, she has three children in KONOS.

JUDY LINZIE (Spanish teacher), B.A. Indiana University with a double major in Spanish and Italian, and a minor in French, was born in Cuba. She has worked in retail analysis, buying, and managing along with Spanish tutoring. She has been a homeschool mom for 25 years, teaching her five children.
