KONOS ACADEMY (Grades 9-12)

KONOS one-day programs offer:

  • One day out with at-home assignments for each week (the best of both worlds)

  • A classically rich academic program

  • Another authority to hold your child accountable

  • Group activities (plays, family programs, etc.)

  • A step-by-step continuum to guarantee no gaps

  • Thinking through every issue from a biblical viewpoint

  • Absorbing, fun projects the KONOS way

  • Positive peer influence

  • Experienced teachers to assess student performance

With sufficient training in reading, writing, and reasoning, KONOS ACADEMY students are ready for high school, college-prep courses. Rather than piecemeal courses, however, students immerse themselves in a historical period, which integrates all their courses. The focus of 2008-09 is Modern Times (1850-present).

My daughter has become such a competent writer under your tutelage.

Your teaching about worldviews has helped me excel in college.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

History (1 credit)

Students will see American history unfold as part of a bigger picture of world culture. What were the formative influences leading to modern and post-modern America? We will look at the ideas and world-shaking events of this century.

English (1 credit)

We will read and analyze a wide variety of twentieth-century novels, plays, poems, and speeches. KONOS scholars have earned a reputation for excellence in writing. Every student refines vocabulary, grammar, and composition skills while writing essays, poems, and major writing projects. The year’s major project is a historical novel along with script-writing, journalistic writing, and persuasive writing. In addition, students improve vocabulary by weekly exercises in Vocabulary from Classical Roots.

Speech and Drama (.5 credit)

Students gain confidence and competence in rhetorical skills through practice in public speaking and drama.

Ethics and Worldview (.5 credit)

Part of our study of Modern Times is the morality of many current issues. Though not a required course to graduate, it is essential for influencing our modern culture. Using a variety of sources, including newspapers, magazines, and TV, students learn about and evaluate these current issues.

Economics (.5 credit)

Each year KONOS ACADEMY adds 1-2 courses to the core courses of English, history, and speech. This year students will learn the basics of the U.S. economic system. What economic factors influence them as consumers, spenders, and citizens?
