KONOS ACADEMY (Grades 9-12)
KONOS one-day programs offer:
With sufficient training in reading, writing, and reasoning, KONOS ACADEMY students are now ready for high school, college-prep courses. Rather than piecemeal courses, students immerse themselves in a historical period, which integrates all their courses. The focus of 2011-12 is The Age of Exploration: 1600-1900 (Reformation through Romantic Period). Each year we also review the big picture of history and geography. My daughter has become such a
competent writer under your tutelage. The scope and depth
of the integrated course of study has provided (our daughter) with an
informed and settled Christian worldview that I wish I'd enjoyed at her
age. History (1 credit) The theme for 2011 is EXPLORATION. Using a variety of resources we examine the expansion of Western Civilization. The world widened through navigation and trade, philosophy, and the arts. America is born and Europe will never be the same. Students learn by reading, lecture, personal research, and group presentations. English (1 credit) English literature is coordinated with the history units. We read and analyze a wide variety of plays, poems, historical fiction, and current works based upon the Reformation, Enlightenment, and Romantic Periods. Students practice vocabulary, grammar, and composition skills every week. Each student will write poems, stories, and essays. Government (.5 credit) Consistent with our focus on the forming of governments, particularly that of the United States, students will become well acquainted with the ways our government works and will debate and give persuasive speeches about our legislative and judicial systems of government. Art and Music Appreciation (.5 credit) Along with the walk through the 1600’s, 1700’s and 1800’s, students will see the art and hear the music of the times. They’ll also learn to appreciate through painting and singing. Speech and Drama C (.5 credit) Every year KONOS students participate in a variety of speeches and a major theatrical performance.
